Burton budget concerns leads to cancellation of 2011 Memorial Day parade

The annual patriotic parade, filled with marching bands, clowns in face paint, politicians shaking hands and veterans waving to throngs of red, white and blue-clad residents has been canceled this year as part of an attempt to fill a $500,000 budget hole.

Mayor Paula Zelenko announced the decision at a recent City Council meeting, but she said the move was just for 2011 and some events will continue this year.

“It was a difficult decision, but we decided we needed to restructure the day,” Zelenko said about canceling the parade and eliminating children’s activities on City Hall’s lawn as part of the cuts.

Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2777 Commander David Roat said he and other veterans were saddened to hear the parade — with upward of 140 entries — would be sidelined. It was started in 1996 by former Mayor Charles Smiley.

“It saddened my heart so bad that we cannot have a parade in Burton anymore like we used to have,” said Roat, a 78-year-old Army veteran. “There’s a lot of community in here that look forward to that day and what it means to all our veterans, past and future. ... It’s heartwarming, and now it’s going to be a black day.”

The day will continue to feature a ceremony honoring veterans, but that will be scheduled for later in the evening, just before a candlelight vigil at nightfall and fireworks.

The city has budgeted $6,000 for 2011 Memorial Day festivities, while the event has cost nearly $30,000 in recent years.

Former organizer Joyce Centilli said the event received $20,000 from the city and raised another $7,000 to $9,000 in donations for festivities in 2006 and 2007.

“People don’t realize what’s involved in the whole Memorial Day thing,” said Centilli, who organized the event since 1998 before handing over the reins to Cheryl Sclater this year. “It’s not just the people walking down the street.
