C&J: Cooking up a little French flavour
If the kitchen is indeed the heart of the home, then this one was in need of a major bypass. Little wonder then, that the forlorn, overstuffed space had become a moot point for its creator Jane, an utterly charming fundraiser from Toronto’s East End. Sure, the problem room was spacious, but its dreadful ergonomics were suffocating our client’s culinary prowess. With visuals more akin to a yard sale than somewhere to prepare dining fancy, it appeared to be at the point of no return. In fact, all things considered, it was so bad that Jane had begun ordering food in whenever she found the opportunity. And we didn’t blame her.
Settled in Jane’s drawing room, we chatted decorative ambition and listened as our new friend discussed her love of all things Parisian. Aspiring to a clean fresh space that would allude to aspects of the “Zinc” bars that liberally pepper the romantic capital, Jane wondered if we might use the silvery metal as counter tops to imbue our scheme with a hint of Gallic charm. We counselled that, beautiful as the soft metal is, it scratches easily and can be difficult to maintain. Undeterred, we found a solution and a way in which to move forward via metal tiled ceiling details and a French grey colour scheme.
With an eye trained firmly on budget, we decided to rework the existing cabinetry rather than pluck it all out and start from scratch. In the project’s favour was the fact that the cupboards were sturdy and, this in mind, we deemed it possible to bring them back to life via careful repainting and switched up hardwares. More and more these days, with the economic climate as it is, we’ll search out ways to save money but, as always, we’ll pull our plans together without sacrificing style.
Returning to our style laboratory and fastened to our drawing boards, we set to work. Because we were refurbishing, we didn’t have as big a gut down as normal and, due to smaller associated costs, we were able to lavish the project with some lovely new inclusions. Here’s the lowdown on how we transformed Jane’s kitchen nightmare into a stunning new kitchen dream. Plus ça change!
Flooring
The ramshackle tiling was carefully removed and a perfect level set with simple DIY store screed. The job, while admittedly time consuming, ensured our new floor would lie perfectly smooth — an important consideration if opting, as we did, for wood-effect flexible Karndean.
