Soul Calibur V Trailer hints at Super Combos

While information has been slowly coming out via Soul Calibur V director’s Twitter (@Daishi_CALIBUR), a brand new trailer hit today from Namco Bandai showing off the first gameplay.  There are more than a few hints here as what’s to come.

First, it seems that the gameplay is going to be a lot faster.  Movement still seems fluid, but combos and attacks look sped up.  Daishi has been hinting at better combat pacing.

The graphics look great.  Soul Calibur 4 was no slouch in that department either, so refinement can only make things better.  Daishi has expressed that anime and manga influence is playing a part in the visuals, so light and shadow effects will be much more prominent.  The overall appearance did seem a tad bit darker, perhaps to try and achieve a comic-strip shaded effect.

I’m not a Soul Calibur expert, but it seems that combos will become more significant based on the trailer.  Also, it seems characters will be receiving Super Moves similar to other fighting games like Street Fighter.  No Heads-Up-Display (HUD) was present in the video, so it’s difficult to tell if meter management will come into play or if you’ll have to do specific combos to lead into special finishers.  Daishi has said that Critical Finishers from SC4 will not return.  These new moves may be the replacement feature.

Only four of the hopeful 26+ character roster are on display.  That includes veterans Siegfried and Mitsurugi, both sporting their new designs for the 17 year time jump.  Sophitia’s two children making up the main characters of the plot, daughter Pyrrha and son Patroklos, appear to mop the floor with the old fogies. Taunts look to be returning as well.

The stages the characters fought on were straight out of SC4.  While it isn’t uncommon for old favorite stages to return, it’s possible they are just placeholder for play-testing.  The game is still very early in development, so some aspects may be changed by the time its release nears.  Linked below is the trailer in its HD glory straight from Gametrailers.com.

WOW! I REALLY WANT THIS GAME NOW! I don’t even have 360 or PS3. I really want the 4th one. I only got the 2nd and 3rd. The song went so well with it that it should have been in the game. XD

Within Temptation is cool, but I only know a couple songs from the band including this one. So, this whole thing was awesome!!!
