Madara named AMA's chief executive officer
CHICAGO - Irvona resident Kathy Williams already had plenty of reasons to be proud of her family. Her daughter is a major serving in Iraq and her son-in-law runs Muddy Run Raceway in Smokerun. And now, she has one more reason to be proud - her brother was recently tabbed executive vice president and chief executive officer of The American Medical Association. The mission of AMA is to promote the art and science of medicine and the betterment of public health. It publishes a variety of journals, including JAMA - Journal of the American Medical Association - that is the second highest impact medical journal in the United States. About 170 state and specialty societies make up AMA, and it is 220,000 physician members strong. Madara is a physician and former academic medical center administrator. He has always been tops amongst his peers - earning the Davenport Lifetime Achievement Award from American Physiological Society, Career Mentoring Award from American Gastroenterological Association, Merit Award from The National Institute of Health and AstraZeneca International Award for research and digestive diseases. "I started out being interested in oncology, and I thought that I should know more about pathology so that I'd be able to talk to pathologists," said Madara. "I ran into a faculty member at Harvard who was interested in gastroenterology and gastrointestinal pathology and I hit it off with him and he became someone who mentored me in that field." "The American Medical Association is thrilled to have a proven medical leader like Madara serve as our next EVP/CEO," said Ardis D. Hoven, M.D., chair, AMA Board of Trustees, in a press release. "Dr. Madara is a strong strategic thinker and planner who has a track record of bringing people together to accomplish significant, ambitious, health-related goals and projects.Work Day Of Clinical Laboratory Scientist - News

{TO: YOU; FROM: ME}: FUTURE CLINICAL LABORATORY SCIENTIST;
Meet my cuddly bed-mates, E. Coli (left) and Bacteriophage (Phage for short, right). There is a story behind this seemingly bizarre photo of two even bizarre-er creatures. I promise. You see, as I was walking home from work today, I felt as if I was on Cloud Nine, thinking of how far I've come since that drizzly October day when I bought these handsome fellas. It was a catastrophic day. Let me tell you. In fact, it was probably one of those days that my own Mother would have looked at me, with furrowed brows, saying what the H-E-double hockey sticks is wrong with you? I will admit it. I spent the majority of that day sprawled on the floor, crying big alligator tears, simply because I did not know what I wanted to do with the rest of my life. Yes, my brain decided that day, for some reason, that we had to figure out the rest of our life - OR ELSE. Please do not remind me how not normal that is, because I already know. Thanks. Seriously though, I knew what I liked, what I was good at, but I had no clue where to go from there. I forgot to mention that 'what I liked' (and still like) was bacteria. Yes, bacteria, the nasty things that grow in our toes and toilets. In an attempt to cure my now broken soul, I jumped online and ordered my two friends pictured above. My life changed a few days later when I discovered that the U of M offered a degree in Clinical Laboratory Sciences. "Clinical laboratory scientists are employed in areas such as forensics, drug analysis, molecular diagnostics, biomedical genetics, cytogenetics, infection control, laboratory information systems, management, quality assurance, and flow cytometry" is what the brochure said. The angels sang. On April 15th, after submitting an application, interviewing, and completing a skills assessment test, I was given notice that I had been one of six selected into the Clinical Laboratory Sciences program. That's right, folks, one of six. My 3.9 GPA must have karate chopped all those post-graduates trying to take my spot. Serves them right! The best part is is that, after fifteen months of studying/training, I will have 100% job placement anywhere in the United States. I've heard horror stories of people with Psychology and Sociology degrees working for minimum wage at Caribou Coffee because their job market is scarce, so I am not going to complain about 100% job placement. That night my friends took me to Applebee's to get my favorite meal, Spinach and Artichoke dip.
