Cub Scouts learn new skills at week-long camp
OCALA – More than 100 Cub Scouts and 50 volunteer staffers from every corner of Marion County participated in a week-long camp June 20-24 at Oaktree Village Campground in northwest Ocala.
The activities included archery, BB guns, swimming, sports, crafts and games.
“It’s a chance for our boys to learn things such as leadership, character development, sportsmanship and physical fitness,” wrote Marion District Director Terry Whitaker in a news release. “Lessons learned today will stay with our boys into adulthood.”
The release, prepared by Stephanie O. Hagins, noted that certified range master Sam Cuomo taught campers, including his son Cameron, about gun safety and care.
Hagins said Cuomo remembered when his pack would set up camp in the Ocala National Forest and take aim at old tin cans and things left by other campers.
“We learned to respect BB guns and handle them safely,” Cuomo told Hagins. “We learned to look out for one another and appreciate the outdoors. Those were fun times. I’m glad my son will have an opportunity to share such a great experience.”
The scouts also learned aiming and scoring techniques in archery while trying out a variety of bow styles.
All camp participants were required to take a swim test and some scouts worked on their Aquanauts badge.
“Swimming and water safety are life skills,” stated Boy Scouts of America Aquatics Instructor Kandi Alder in the release. “My goal is to teach them confidence and hone their safety skills. If one of these boys finds themselves in a questionable situation, they know not to panic, but to assess the situation and act using the water safety techniques taught here at camp. I want these boys to have fun and be safe.”
Alder is one of five BSA approved aquatics instructors in the state, said Hagins.
The scouts spent about 50 minutes at each activity, stopping for water breaks, snacks and lunch. They were accompanied by adult volunteers and older scouts seeking community service credits. Belt loops, pins and patches were awarded depending on the level accomplished by each scout.
According to Hagins, at the end of each day, everyone gathered around a flag pole for skits and camp songs. Core values such as compassion, cooperation and perseverance were reviewed. The flag was then lowered and carefully folded.

Of course, one of the best precautions parents can take to protect their children around water is what Krizan did--teach them how to swim. Krizan said her husband was a Boy Scout and wanted Mitchell to feel comfortable if he were to ever find himself
LaValley started the hard swim toward the drowning woman and was joined shortly by the woman's boyfriend. "He gave out of steam about 150 yards out," LaValley said. Knowing it was up to him to reach the woman on his own, LaValley pushed on.

All campers (adults included) need to pass the official Boy Scouts of America swim test: 75 yards of any stroke (sidestroke permitted) followed by 25 yards of elementary backstroke and a ten second back float. The water at Catalina Island was bracing, and all passed the test. For me, it was a flashback to the 70s, swimming in Lake Androscoggin in Maine. The little colored chits indicate "passed" and are used as an entry ticket to the waterfront.Bsa Swim Test - Bookshelf
