Project Description: The technology to be employed will be blogs. The student will read an online or print journal article and review and respond to the article utilizing their student blog. They will receive feedback and have discussions with their peers and others who may read and respond to their blog. The blog will be evaluated by the class instructor for clarity of writing, critical thinking skills, and analysis of the chosen article.
Project Scope: The scope of this project is for the Intro to Sports Medicine course at NJC. If the project has positive effects on student learning as assessed through the achievement of learning outcomes then it will be implemented throughout the entire sports medicine program and then through the Health, Physical Education, and Recreation Department.
Project’s Central Elements: The project has many elements that affect the outcomes. The project will be implemented in Intro to Sports Medicine and all of the students in that course will be required to participate.
Major Steps: There are several steps that must be taken to implement this project successfully. 1) The program will need to invest in or have access to blogging software that will allow students to post media rich blogs and comment on the blogs of other students. The instructor will need to subscribe to the blogs using RSS feeds or other resources to ensure that they are able to read, respond to, and evaluate their students blogs. 2) Rubrics must be created for students to understand what is expected of them. 3) subscriptions to online and print journals must be obtained so that students can have a variety of material to choose from. 4)Students must buy into the process of peer and self reviewing so that the blogs are meaningful learning tools.
Key Activities: 1). Selecting Journal Articles to read. The appropriate article will be from a peer reviewed scientific journal. 2). summarize the article. Tell the audience in brief what the article was about. 3) Critique the article. Using the rubric developed in class evaluate the article for all key components. What are the shortcomings? What are the successes? What areas need further research? In your opinion was the article relevant to your pursuit of a sports medicine career? 4) Read and comment on at least 3 classmates journal review blogs. They must be insightful posts that include more than simply “i agree.” 5) Reflect on your learning and write a short comment in your blog about this reflection.
