Outside-the-box fundraising encourages teams in Relay For Life

The entire effort took 10 and a half hours — but Pullins said he would do it again for the American Cancer Society.

“When we were discussing fundraising ideas, we got to thinking, as hard as it is to battle cancer, what could we do to reflect that effort and be able to inspire people to donate?” he said. “I thought of the idea as being something unique and different — I’ve never heard of anyone doing it before.”

Pullins and “In Pursuit” are just one of 38 teams that will be represented at Relay For Life of Lancaster, which kicks off at 6 p.m. Friday.

Terri Kangas, income development representative for the American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Lancaster, said the teams are halfway to their goal of $113,000 total for cancer research.

On Friday and Saturday, those teams will continue their fundraising during the event, she said.

“I know I have some teams that fundraise year round; they’ll do one fundraiser a month,” she said. “One team has a goal of $25,000 and they have not missed a goal yet.”

Residents who aren’t part of a fundraising team can still come out and participate Friday and Saturday, Kangas said. She noted that every year, hundreds of people come out to walk on their own or cheer on the participants.

“We always get a lot of community support,” she said.

Relay For Life of Lancaster is an 18-hour event that begins Friday evening and continues throughout the night and into Saturday.

There are three traditional portions of the Relay For Life. At 6 p.m. Friday, the event begins with a Survivors Lap, in which anyone who has been diagnosed with cancer is invited to circle the track together.

The Luminaria Ceremony begins at dusk, where candles are lit to honor and remember those who lost their lives to the disease.

Following the Luminaria Ceremony is the Fight Back ceremony, where people are encouraged to take a stand and fight back against the disease.

“The whole concept is to celebrate, remember and fight back,” Kangas said.

Kangas said residents who have never attended the Relay For Life before can expect to witness an powerful and emotional event that also is enjoyable for the whole family.
