What is a browser hijack redirect? This is when you browser has been hijacked to another webpage than it is supposed to be on. It can also be when you click on a link and get redirected to another page. It can even be when you open a new tab and your tab opens to another site than it is supposed to. This list can go on and on. As browsers become more advanced so do the hijacks and redirects.

In general a browser hijack redirect is not all that bad. This can be as simple as installing a google or yahoo toolbar. This in definition is a hijack. You install a program that comes with the google or yahoo toolbar and it will change your homepage. This is also how the bad hijackers get installed on your computer. You install some program and it is hidden inside of it. One of the common ones is the ask toolbar. I have seen this toolbar installed before without asking. I don’t really consider it a “bad” hijacker because you can go into the program files and uninstall it.

A browser hijack redirect is a little different from I have been talking about. The redirect is not when you install a toolbar and it changes your homepage. A redirect is when you are able to go to your homepage and it then redirects you to another site. The redirect can also occur when you click on a link. It will redirect you to some advertisement instead of the actual link. I do consider these ones “bad” because it gets installed without you knowing and you cannot just uninstall it like you can a toolbar. It usually installs in your registry, and you either need to manually change it or use some anti-malware program to change it.

What is the point to a browser hijack redirect? Money is the main reason behind these redirects. Advertising companies pay money for these redirect clicks. The person who makes the browser redirect is usually an affiliate of the advertising company. Every time you get redirected to another page or click on a link that redirects to another page, they make money. Money is the name of the game and if you want to stop these people from hijacking browsers, you have to cut them off where it hurts. You need to find the site you are being redirected to. They should have a spam or report section where you can report the affiliate id. The affiliate id is usually shown in the address line of the browser. If it is not shown there you can right click on the page and choose view source and it should have some sort of affiliate id listed in the page. Just report this to the site you are being redirected to, and they will eventually stop paying them.
