Free run in VVIP zone: MP's house burgled twice in 2 days

NEW DELHI: Members of Parliament may enjoy many privileges, including a patch in Lutyen's Delhi to call their home, but even they have no immunity from burglaries. Ask four-time Lok Sabha MP P C Chacko , who is chairman of the joint parliamentary committee on the 2G scam. The veteran Congress leader's bungalow in the Windsor Place area was broken in not once but twice in two days.

In fact, the Kerala MP was explaining to TOI on Wednesday evening how the first burglary had taken place, when his secretary rushed in to inform him about the second break-in. The intruder scaled the walls of the bungalow, entered the bathroom and took away the taps. His secretary even saw the man escape but failed to nab him.

Chacko said this was the third burglary at his residence in the recent past.

In another daring strike on Tuesday night, thieves took away 1.5km of cable being laid near India Gate to install CCTC cameras.

"Almost every week, one of my neighbours complains of a break-in. A park near my residence, close to the Le Meridian hotel, has been taken over by smack addicts. The area DCP came to meet me on Tuesday after the first incident and I pointed out that I no longer see the PCR van which was so often parked near my residence," said Chacko .

After a recent murder near Hanuman Mandir near CP – allegedly over distribution of drug money – the cops admitted to six burglaries at MP quarters so far this year. The police though claim these incidents were "coming down".

Additional CP (New Delhi) K C Dwivedi said, last year, till the end of June, 11 attempts on MP bungalows and flats had been made.

"We know that various vagabonds here deal in smack. Last year, we arrested 16 people for using smack. This year, the special drive has yielded 74 arrests. We have nabbed three suppliers and recovered 208.9g of smack. Last year, we had seized 10.2g. We had summoned 69 people to court this year as compared to 13 last year. We have also nabbed 497 vagabonds so far as compared to 442 through 12 months last year," said Dwivedi.

The facts on the ground, however, tell a different story. Though the New Delhi police denied the incident, cops received a call last week from a German tourist J Prinz who was robbed on the road.
