National Western Stock Show heading to Aurora? Hold your horses!

Here in the mild, mild West, they hire lawyers and lobbyists and ask you to help build their new corral. Because now it looks like Denver will not only lose the National Western Stock Show to Aurora, but may pay for the privilege.

“That and the Montgomery livestock show, too. Other towns did trail rides, but no one from South Alabama did. His idea was to go to Montgomery.” It took months to plan, she said. Harper carefully planned every detail from campsites to what to stock in

Book club alert: 3 great novels for summer reading

Ask an American to name a famous Old West showdown, and odds are that even the greenest of greenhorns can come up with one: The Gunfight at the OK Corral. Reinventing the Western has become something of a national pastime since at least Clint

No legal solutions for Indonesia in battle at the live cattle corral

When industry responded with an inadequate plan that seemed to be all about risk management as opposed to genuinely improving animal welfare it was only a matter of time before a public scandal necessitating a complete ban would occur.

Back On The Homestead | Blog | Homestead Yard Plan

Homestead yard plan is a major consideration as it represents a lifelong design that may not be easily changed in the future and so careful consideration is important.

Planning considerations include:

1)       Lay of the land

2)      Orientation of the homestead

3)      Access to the property

4)      Needed structures

5)      Utilities

6)      Land quality

7)      View

8)      Water supply

9)      Waste disposal

10)   Livestock and Crops

11)    Access to schools/public facilities

A successful plan will include all these ideas into the design model of your homestead yard plan. Your farm yard plan should be fluid in design by allowing for easy movement of humans, livestock and equipment.

1)      The lay of the land will determine a great many things on your homestead. If you happen to live on the prairies your canvas may be flat, wide open land. If you live in the foothills region then you have to design around undulating land that may require care in layout of outbuildings and road building. If you live in the peace country then you have wetlands to work with. There are many variations to be aware of when one looks at the lay of the land.

2)      Orientation of the farm design means what direction you want the majority of buildings to face. Each direction has its advantages and disadvantages.  For example here in southern Alberta facing into the West means extremely strong winds from the mountains 7 months of the year and from the North strong cold fronts in the winter. Typically most farms have their “back” to the Northwest.

3)      Access to the homestead is based on roads common to the region. Try to avoid property that may be land locked by other properties. Items to be on the lookout for are bridges, culverts, natural waterways, coulees, and right away through other peoples’ land.

4)      Homestead yard plan will require many farm structures. Your farm design is determined on the actual usage that you plan for. That is if you specialize in livestock you will have more corrals and barns in your farm design. If crops are more of an interest then you will look at Quonset and storage buildings in your farm yard plan. The core of the homestead yard plan will have a home, garage, well site, barn, garden shed. Additional farm structures for the yard plan would also include corrals, wood shed, chicken coop, greenhouse, Quonsets, storage bins; mechanics shop to name a few.
