Blue Jackets notebook: Feeling wanted helped Wisniewski make choice
In trying to woo James Wisniewski, the Blue Jackets knew they couldn't sell the defenseman on their storied history. The average January temperature isn't exactly enticing. Neither is the city's star power - unless you're into celebrity zookeepers.
But the Jackets understood what the six-year NHL veteran really desired: a chance to become a difference-maker. They needed what Wisniewski's game offers.
"His potential role here was probably as good as he was going to find," general manager Scott Howson said. "(Our) lack of a power guy, the lack of a big shot on the back end. Those things just seemed to fit."
For the first time in his career, the 27-year-old will be the featured defenseman.
"I felt how much they really wanted me and I'm the type of guy who wants to play for an organization that wants me," Wisniewski said. "I want to be a part of a team that's starting fresh and trying to go on the rise and I want to be one of the main guys who helps the team do that."
His agent, Bill Zito, had a long talk with his client after they made a trip to Columbus on Thursday. He reminded him of the potential riches and opportunities in free agency.
"You know what he said, and this isn't B.S.," Zito recalled. "(Wisniewski) said, 'I like it there.' He wanted to be in Columbus."
The Canton, Mich., native spent his first five seasons in Chicago and Anaheim playing the role of a defending defenseman. It wasn't until he joined the New York Islanders last season - and later the Montreal Canadiens - that he had a chance to showcase his big shot and offensive abilities.
He sensed the knee injury to Montreal's Andrei Markov was his chance to prove his worth. Wisniewski compiled career highs in goals (10) and assists (41).
"I try to make myself a full, dynamic player," he said. "(I can) kill penalties, block shots, fight, hit and play a skilled game. I pride myself on being an all-around player."
Wisniewski, who will wear No.21 for the Jackets, said he's anxious to live up to his big-ticket contract.
"I am not content right now," he said. "I want to prove (I'm worth the) money and bring home the Stanley Cup to the city of Columbus."
Backup planThe Jackets' most surprising decision yesterday involved signing a minor-league goaltender to back up their starter who has struggled the past two seasons.
Mark Dekanich, 25, who's played one NHL game, is expected to serve as Steve Mason's backup. The Jackets signed him to a one-year, one-way contract for $575,000. Dekanich has spent most of the past three seasons playing for Nashville's top minor-league club.
