Strauss-Kahn free from house arrest but still facing sexual assault charges

NEW YORK (AP) — Former International Monetary Fund chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn is now free from house arrest, but he's still facing sexual assault charges.

A New York judge freed Strauss-Kahn after prosecutors said a background investigation into his accuser turned up a number of problems. In a letter to defense lawyers, they said the hotel housekeeper misrepresented what she did after Strauss-Kahn's alleged attack -- cleaning another room and returning to Strauss-Kahn's suite before telling her supervisor, rather than fleeing and immediately reporting the incident. They also said she admitted inventing a story of being gang raped in her homeland to strengthen her application for political asylum.

Outside the court, the woman's attorney maintained that Strauss-Kahn had assaulted his client, and that she has been consistent in her description of the attack. He accused the district attorney's office of being scared to prosecute the case.

Strauss-Kahn's attorney described today's decision as "a great relief" and said it underscored how easy it is to "rush to judgment."

While Strauss-Kahn will be free to travel in the United States, his passport was not returned and he is not allowed to leave the country.

IMF LEADER-FRANCE

France riveted by Strauss-Kahn developments

PARIS (AP) — France was riveted as Dominique Strauss-Kahn walked out of a New York courthouse without bail and free from house arrest, with his allies hopeful that he can revive a 2012 presidential bid if exonerated.

New York prosecutors acknowledged Friday there were questions about the credibility of the hotel housekeeper who accused him of sexual assault.

The surprise development was welcomed by many, not only those who want to see Socialist Strauss-Kahn replace conservative Nicolas Sarkozy as president, but also many who feel the U.S. media and public have unfairly assumed the 62-year-old Frenchman is guilty.

Strauss-Kahn stepped down as head of the International Monetary Fund after he was charged in May. He denies the allegations.

Sutherlin pulls funding for groups | KPIC CBS 4 - News, Weather ...

On Tuesday, the council voted 4-3 to no longer give almost $23,000 to the different groups. They included Saving Grace, U-Trans, Casa de Belen and the Southern Oregon Wine Institute.

City Manager Rob Corbett says for some, it was a big point of contention. "For a lot of people in the community, the issue as I heard it, was that money was flowing outside the city limits of Sutherlin, when there was such a great need inside the city limits."

Groups had approached the council last year, and they agreed to give the money over time. Once people became angry, they pulled it.

Saving Grace says this is a big hit because they started construction depending on that money, and they might have to take it from other sources. "Ultimately we would have to take unrestricted funding to be able to finish paying for construction if the grants and pledges were not paid," said Wendy Kang of Saving Grace.

Most unrestricted funding goes for the feeding and housing of animals, which is the shelter's biggest expense.

Corbett says once things improve they could begin helping those programs again, and he expects people to be talking about the issue for a while.

While some of the savings will go to the local food bank and the Sutherlin Lions Club, the council has yet to decide what to do with the rest of it.
