Codys stand their ground

He was on 10 June 1854, the settlers gathered at the local Trading Post Rively Association to organize the squatters Salt Creek.

This type of organization has been the norm to govern the payment of claims in a new area by setting up a register of complaints and the appointment of a board of directors to manage the claim jumpers and settle disputes.

Thirteen men were appointed to the committee, which included Isaac Cody, Bill Cody's father.Most of all original inhabitants were more favorable to slave traders, who also passed resolutions to protect themselves against the anti-slavery forces. Isaac Cody was accepted as "sound on the goose" because he was known to them as the brother of Cody Elijah slave. In fact, Cody was a free-stater, as opposed to the spread of slavery in Kansas.

At the end of the summer, Cody family moved into their log home to seven large room.The settlers began to arrive from the East, just deflate the confidence of the pro-slavery faction easily influence the colonists to support the extension of slavery in Kansas. As for the Codys were concerned, their hope of peaceful coexistence has been a violent end when on September 18, at the next meeting of the Association of squatters, Isaac was persuaded to talk.

No longer able to hide his true stand on the issue of slavery, he expressed his opposition to the institution and was consequently stabbed by Charles Dunn, a local bandit was actually employed by Elie Cody.Isaac did not immediately die of his injury (which pierced his lung), the stabbing would eventually contribute to the cause of his death in 1857.

From this point, the family met Cody continued harassment of their neighbors slave. Hay that had been stacked to fill contracts with Isaac Fort Leavenworth was burned, horses were stolen, often ransacked the house and valuables stolen. Many times, the men arrived in the night, demanding to see Cody so they can kill him, and on one occasion a powder keg was found left behind, designed to blow up the house of Cody.Years later, Mary Cody, as administrator of the estate of widows Isaac Cody, submit a claim for loss in disorders of the border of Kansas, with thousands of other victims who fell prey to the burning, looting, terrorizing and killing that took place.

Therein you shall find the answers as to why they would be inclined to fine such a man regardless of anything. How about the fact that you are imprisoned for up to 15 years for “manslaughter” for killing somebody in your self defense or the defense of your family, etc. even when it is proven beyond all reasonable doubt that had the killing not happened then the killer would most likely have been killed (this is obviously not possible for humans to prove anyway).

According to the common law, the man mentioned had presented totally relevant evidence in relation to why he drove 35mph for a purpose he would not have driven 35mph had it not existed. But the point the courts are making is “Regardless of this, he still went over the limit did he not?”… the courts are interested in money and not establishing justice where the two conflict. This relates to what is said on page 6 of “A SELECTION OF LEGAL MAXIMS, CLASSIFIED AND ILLUSTRATED” by HERBERT BROOM!
