An introduction to Ubuntu 11.04
The old Applications menu has gone and in its place is the Launcher down the left hand side of the screen. This shows all running programs with icons for frequently used programs such as Firefox, LibreOffice Writer and the Software centre. Click on an icon to start the program and you will see a triangle appear to show that the program is running. If the program you want isn't shown, click on the magnifying glass with a plus symbol to search for more programs. Start typing the name of the program you want [gpodder] and the results will be shown. Click on the icon to start the program.
To keep a program in the launcher, right-click on its icon and select ‘Keep in Launcher'.
Software Centre The home folder for your documents has stayed the same and you can find your files in a couple of different ways. Click on the top icon in the Launcher to see your home folder.
If you have a specific file in mind click on the bottom icon in the Launcher and start typing the name to search for it. This only searches the file name but also shows recently used files.
Wireless networks The power icon in the top right-hand corner is used to shut down the computer or log out. You can quickly switch to another account. One new feature to Ubuntu 11.04 is the Guest session. It's ideal if a friend wants to use the web; the guest account has internet access but cannot open any of your personal files. The bottom option, System Settings, is the equivalent of Control Panel in Windows.

Install a firewall, and set it to warn you anytime a program tries to access the internet. It will pop up with the name and location of the file doing so.

go to start run then type msconfig in the run bar and hit enter. then go to the startup tab at the end these are all the things that are starting up and some what trying to get on the internet when you try to get on the internet. if you take the check out of the boxes they will not start up then it will say do you wanna keep the changes to your system configeration utlilty when you restart just choose ok. when you run your scans depending on what computer you have you need to run them in safe mode this keeps these items from starting up and the scans you run are more likely to find things also you should try spysweeper this is a wonderful spyware program it finds trojans also! if adaware finds the items just follow the paths and delete them manually because adaware may find them but may not be ablt to delete them.

Download HijackThis! and it will give you a list of multiple methods programs use to start up and also shows browser hijackers (incase it uses your Internet Explorer to start). Hijack This! is a popular program that is used to make a log file of what programs start on your computer so if you run into problems you can post that log on a web forum and ask other more experienced users for help with a problem. You can also use it to stop a program from automatically starting, but caution must be exercised when doing so because you can accidentally screw things up if you don’t know what you are doing. You can get the program at http://www.merijn.org/ do a search to find forums where you can post your Hijack This! log and get help, there’s tons out there. I usually use the Web User forums, they are VERY helpful and quick to respond. That address is http://www.webuser.co.uk/forums/ubbthreads.
