Can any one give me tips on surf fishing for blue and stripped ...

I’m no expert at all, but I guess I can help a little bit. use at least 15lb mono for striped bass, with 15lb being best for using with lures, since you’ll want the better casting thinner diameter line if you’re going to spend the day casting a lot. if you’re just casting out bait and waiting for a bite, go up to 20lb mono, just to be safe. braid is another option, actually it’s probably a better option in this case. 50lb braid with a 20lb mono leader would be a good set-up. the mono leader for low visibility and also better knots; braid isn’t the best line for knot tying. if you’re going to encounter quite a few bluefish, think about going with a wire-leader instead of the mono. they have teeth and can shred through line quite easily.

a standard Carolina-rig (also called a slip sinker rig) should do, but I’ve noticed saltwater guys usually use very confusing, complicated rigs with a number of hooks attached. this is not necessary but apparently it helps a lot. I’ll give some links to those rigs at the end, but for now I’ll talk about slip sinker rigs. it’s an easy rig. get a few packages of bank sinkers, these are better in the surf as they hold in the sandy bottoms of the ocean well. get a variety of sizes, from 2oz to 6oz. it’s pretty much a toss up on what size to use because each day the current is different, so it’s great to have a variety on hand.

slide a bank sinker on your line, now you’ll want to attach a barrel swivel. it’s CRITICAL to get a high quality SALTWATER GRADE barrel swivel, they should say "saltwater" on them and have a weight such as 60lb, 80lb, 100lb, etc. any weight is fine for the fishing you’re doing. tie it on using a palomar knot, if you don’t already know this knot, search "How to tie a palomar knot" on YouTube and/or Google and you’ll find a bunch of results. okay, on the other side of the swivel, you’re going to tie your leader line.

1 1/2′ is plenty long enough for a leader, a little shorter or longer is okay too. use a wire leader as your leader, IF you are chasing blues, if not then 20lb mono will do. tie your leader to the other end of the swivel using a palomar knot as well. also, if you’re using a mono main-line, just use the same pound test as your leader, IF you’re not going to run into many blues. now it’s time for your hook. for striped bass, anything from a 4/0 to a 7/0 hook will do. you’ll want "circle hooks", which you do not have to set the hook with, when the fish runs with the bait just lift the rod over your head and the fish will hook itself. about 7/0 is perfect for bluefish.
