Pine Bluff family maintains the routines and rhythms of a small farm
People’s lives are written on the fields of old farms.
Jim and Gordy Lamberty are brothers who have farmed together every day of their adult lives on 180 acres their family calls Whistling Pines near the village of Pine Bluff, a tiny crossroads west of Madison.
In early 2010, I began coming to the farm to take pictures of the brothers, their mother, Marie, and Gordy’s new wife, Vicky. Their way of life reminded me that the small farms are still out there. The pictures with this story were taken in the space of one year — mostly 2010 — a big year for the Lambertys. The weather smiled and the farm produced some of the best crops the brothers remember. In April, Gordy married Vicky Skilondz, 44, and moved off the farm for the first time. Now Gordy, 55, commutes from Mount Horeb to work with Jim, 62, often with Vicky at his side.
The brothers’ lives follow the twice-daily routine of milking and the rhythm of the seasons. There are 40 Holstein cows in the milking herd who are known by their names.
“Thelma” occupies the stanchion in the barn next to “Louise.”
In the milking barn, few words pass between the two men as they move among the cows, feeding, cleaning and connecting each one in turn to the milk pipeline. A country music station, the sounds of the animals and the tick, tick, tick of the milker provide the background sound. Words are unnecessary when you have had years of practice.
Milk in the morning and milk at night. Feed cows and calves. Plant crops. Grind feed. Chop and bale hay. Cut wood. Clean the barn. Manure the field. Plow snow and split wood in winter. In spring, pick up rocks from the fields. Cultivate corn. Pick corn. Harvest oats and barley. Help calves be born. Milk in the morning and milk at night.
“The smaller farm is the convenience of being your own boss,” says Gordy. “You do what you want to do today, tomorrow, next year. The downside is you got to do all the work.”
“The weather dictates your work,” he adds. “If it rains for a week, you don’t do nothin’. You know the old saying, ‘Make hay when the sun shines,’ and that’s what farmers do.”
“Then you might have 17-18 hour days,” Jim adds. “We don’t work on Sunday unless it’s seasonal work. If it rains on Saturday and the hay is fit on Sunday, we ain’t gonna wait until Monday. Winter time you sometimes have a few days off.”
“I think these little places that have a uniqueness about them and still have a direct contact with the land are important,” says Vicky, who grew up in Chicago, then in Lodi. Now she works with Gordy, Jim and Marie and has a part-time job off the farm. “Should everything be technologically advanced? People have the right to live a simple life, a hard life if they want.
