Douglas Booth named Steinfeld's Romeo; Westwick, Holly Hunter also cast

MANILA, Philippines -- Miley Cyrus’s “LOL” co-actor Douglas Booth is set to star opposite Filipino-American young actress Hailee Steinfeld in the upcoming “Romeo and Juliet” reboot.

Booth, 19, who is five years Steinfeld’s senior, is best recalled for his portrayal of Boy George in the BBC2 TV drama “Worried About the Boy” and most recently for “Christopher and His Kind.”

“Gossip Girl” actor Ed Westwick and Oscar-winning star of “The Piano” Holly Hunter are also cast in “Romeo and Juliet” set for release next year.

Westwick, who was recently in Manila for a fashion endorsement, is playing Juliet’s ill-tempered cousin Tybalt while Hunter will trade much of her scenes with Steinfeld as Juliet’s nurse and confidante.

Steinfeld, who rose to fame after stealing the movie “True Grit” and earned an Oscar nod for best supporting actress for her portrayal of Mattie Ross, recently had the “Romeo and Juliet” script revised when she was cast as Juliet. Initial writing included nudity and love-making scenes that did not fit the 14-year-old Fil-Am.

The adaptation’s director Carlo Carlei recently clarified he tossed out the age-inappropriate requirements of the original script. “In the original adaptation written by the Oscar-winning screenwriter Julian Fellowes, there was a lovemaking scene that included nudity for the married Romeo and Juliet. The script was written with a 20-year-old actress in mind. As soon as Hailee Steinfeld was cast, all nudity and lovemaking have been excised from the script. It will be romantic and age-appropriate for a 14-year-old,” Carlei explained to EW.

The filmmakers cleared the air after the following part of the script leaked to the media: “They (Romeo and Juliet) start undressing each other – slowly, gently and carefully until they are naked. They are eternal figures in a Raphael painting. Romeo then carries her to bed, kissing her again and again as they explore uncharted territory. Then they make love, transported into each other’s soul.”

Earlier Sunday Times reports quoted screenwriter Julian Fellowes saying she “wanted Hailee because she is the perfect age. Juliet is at that stage of what you might call a child/woman. Just like Hailee herself is.”

Spotted at the “Cars 2” red carpet screening at El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood over the weekend, Steinfeld also talked about Joel and Ethan Coen-helmed Western “True Grit” anew. She shared via behind-the-scenes clip: “They were really flexible with any of the ideas that any of the actors had [on the set of ‘True Grit’], and they always wanted to make sure I was happy with the take that we did. They were always open if I wanted to do another take or if I wanted to try something else.
