Culture City Online: Tech Help to Reach New Theatergoers

The New York-based Theater Development Fund, the nonprofit behind the TKTS booths, is giving a boost to accessibility for the hearing impaired in regional theaters.

TDF received a $30,000 grant this week from the National Endowment for the Arts that will support the National Open Captioning Initiative, which helps theaters outside New York install technology to assist deaf and hard-of-hearing theater patrons.

Now in its seventh season, the TDF initiative partners with theaters for two years to help them implement a captioning system. Created by the New York-based company C2, the system is a LED screen positioned at the side of the stage that displays the text as the show progresses.

Installation is only one component the work. The real challenge is in raising awareness and bringing in deaf audiences who may have avoided the theater in the past.

“It is technical assistance, but we also share what have we learned about outreach and marketing,” said Victoria Bailey, TDF’s executive director . “It has grown slowly. The funding for it allows a leap.”

TDF began the captioning effort in New York, then moved to help theaters in London’s West End. The work then moved to regional venues throughout the U.S.

“One thing that is so important about getting this funding is that it says this is an important and national initiative,” Bailey said. “My hope is that it creates a network of theaters around the country.”

In the 2011-12 season, the initiative will help 11  theaters. Seven of the venues will be using the captioning system for the first time: Alliance Theatre and Fox Theatre in Atlanta; Blumenthal Performing Arts Center in Charlotte, N.C.; Chrysler Hall in Norfolk, Va.; Portland Center for the Performing Arts in Oregon; Steppenwolf Theatre in Chicago; and Tennessee Performing Arts Center in Nashville.
