Ice Cream for Dinner?

It was a rough week. My husband, 8-month-old and I all had a bad cold. The house was a wreck. My almost-three-year old had just discovered her ability to test boundaries. One night, after a particularly busy day at work and a long commute home, I was trying to feed the baby her dinner mush while my husband got supper ready for the rest of us and we tried to discuss, between baby screeching and toddler shouting, the plan to do it all again tomorrow.

Everyone was tired and cranky. I felt at the end of my rope. Then my oldest daughter, after removing her pants for some reason and throwing them on the kitchen floor, started running around the house yelling, “ICE CREAM ICE CREAM ICE CREAM ICE CREAM!”

“How about some cheese or a piece of fruit?” I offered.

“NOOOOOOOOOOO! ICE CREAM ICE CREAM ICE CREAM!” was the reply.

“Daddy is making us a yummy dinner, why don’t we wait and eat then?” I asked.

“ICE CREAM ICE CREAM ICE CREAM!”

With the baby whining and spitting oatmeal everywhere, my husband using his last bit of strength to get some water boiling for pasta, and me with a headache, sore throat, and zero energy feeling completely frazzled, I gave in. Ice cream for dinner it was!

I plopped the ice cream down on the kitchen table, told her to have at it, and then went about trying to get the baby to eat a bit more and put the ice cream incident out of my head. I tried not to second-guess or be too hard on myself, especially considering how worn out everyone was. I even joked to my husband that at least, since it was strawberry ice cream, she was getting the fruit and milk groups.

Parents Magazine recently ran an article on “Bad Mommy Moments” where moms talk about their parenting choices that may be viewed as questionable. One woman prevents her tired kid from napping so that the child sleeps through the night. The magazine gives the moms tips on how to “give up the guilt.” I think a good start would be to not call the decisions “Bad Mommy Moments” to begin with.  How about: “You Gotta’ Do What You Gotta’ Do Moments” instead?  We all have rough days where our juggles get the best of us and we have to let some things slide.

One of my colleagues, for instance, says there are plenty of nights when neither she nor her husband can really deal with giving their daughter a bath at the end of a long day. Same with a home-cooked dinner. “Maybe it’s a slippery slope, though, or maybe there are some things you can legitimately slack off on?” she says.
