Inaugural intern program at AAR takes flight

• Based in the Chicago suburb of Wood Dale, Ill.

• Employs more than 6,000 people at more than 60 locations in 13 countries.

• Operates four aircraft maintenance facilities, one each in Oklahoma City, Hot Springs, Ark., Indianapolis and Miami.

• Customers include Boeing, American Airlines, United Airlines, Airbus, Southwest Airlines, GE, the U.S. government and many others.

• The facility at Will Rogers World Airport is 300,000-square-feet and includes seven hangars that provide services for 727, 737, DC-9, MD-80/90 and regional aircraft.

As the first interns at AAR in Oklahoma City , the teens will be able to say, “I worked on jet airplanes.” Starting Monday, they will spend six weeks learning the ins and outs of aircraft maintenance, repair and overhaul.

For AAR, the intern program is a way to leave a lasting impression on potential future workers before they go off to college and find a career elsewhere.

For Rodriguez, 17, and Wahl, 16, it's more than a summer job. It's an experience, a gold star on their resume and a chance to see if they have what it takes to become an aircraft mechanic.

“This is kind of like make-or-break,” said Wahl, who also works at Jersey Mike 's Subs. If he likes the work at AAR, he'll pursue the field in college. If not, he said it's better to know now before spending four to five years and thousands of dollars on his degree.

What they'll be doing

Dellinger said the interns will experience company operations: aircraft repair, quality control, shipping and receiving, accounting — everything from working with a mechanic to payroll and inventory. They'll also learn about perfection, something essential to an aircraft mechanic when so many lives are at stake.

And they are getting paid, partly to reinforce the industry's reputation for providing high-paying jobs to skilled workers. “Seeing a jet and knowing you had a hand in that — that's something you'll never forget,” Dellinger told them.
